Movie Review: ?Brave?

Over the weekend, I made my way out to the movie theater to see the new Disney/Pixar film Brave and while I generally liked the film, I’m sorry to say that I didn’t love the film. Because Brave is a Pixar film, I had high expectations concerning animation, character development and story. Again, I’m sorry [...]

Selena Gomez Says New Album Won't Be Justin Bieber 'Tell-All'

Follow-up to 2011's When the Sun Goes Down 'going to be the biggest one for me personally,' singer says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Selena Gomez is readying work on her brand-new music. She recently shared she wanted to work with a whole bevy of artists ranging from New York rockers Fun. to Nashville princess Taylor Swift, but don't expect her to get another world-famous pop star on the album.

And, don't even expect her to sing about him, either. "It's not going to be necessarily, 'Here's my tell-all,' " Gomez explained to E! News about the possibility of her getting personal about her relationship with Justin Bieber on the record. "It's going to be more of something that people could say, 'It could be that or it could be this or it could be that.' At the end of the day, I only make my music because I want it [to] be really fun, and if I could have people dance to it, relate to it, have a good time, that's all I want."

Having already met with producers to begin talks about this whole new set of music, her follow-up to 2011's When the Sun Goes Down, she wants to grow. She's met with the likes of Toby Gad and Rock Mafia. "I think this is going to be the biggest one for me personally. I want to be able to write about things I've never talked about before and tell a story with this album, because I've never actually had time to go in and do that," she said. "I've never worked on a song for more than two days."

In an interview with MTV News, Gomez shared that she wanted to get into the studio by year's end and confirmed she hoped to try out a whole new set of sounds on it. "Very different! I want to go for producers that probably wouldn't want me to do their songs," she said. "I just want to knock on their door. I also want to work with Fun. I want to work with just different styles of music."

Gomez has yet to announce a release date, but the album is expected to drop in 2013.

'Glee'-Cap: Michael Jackson Invades McKinley High

King of Pop's takeover leads to some head-scratching song choices.
By Jim Cantiello

"Glee" paid tribute to Michael Jackson during Tuesday night's episode and, shockingly, kept the story moving along in the midst of several MJ-inspired musical numbers. Kurt, Rachel and Quinn all received great news about college, Rachel finally accepted Finn's proposal and evil Sebastian's plot to harm Kurt with a doctored slushee backfired when Blaine took the hit for his boyfriend.

Yet the forced "all Michael, all the time" song selection led to some head-scratching scenes including Kurt, Rachel and Finn serenading an injured Blaine with Jackson's love song to a rat, "Ben," and two different music-video re-enactments only appealed to Jackson superfans. The rest of us can enjoy my latest "Glee-cap"! Charlie Sheen To Play President In 'Machete' Sequel

Director Robert Rodriguez announces the casting in a tweet.
By Gil Kaufman

Charlie Sheen

Like father, like son. Charlie Sheen could follow pops Martin into the White House in an upcoming big screen role as the president in director Robert Rodriguez's sequel to his "Grindhouse" action pic, "Machete."

Rodriguez announced the casting on Thursday in a tweet that read, "I just cast Charlie Sheen in #machetekills as the President of the United States! Who better? More soon..." Sheen retweeted the message, which also included a photo of the "Anger Management" actor leaning his arm on Rodriguez's shoulder. A spokesperson for Sheen confirmed that negotiations are under way to have him join the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

If Sheen ends up in the movie, he'll be the second member of his family to take on the role of command-in-chief, following in the footsteps of Martin, who played the fictional President Josiah Bartlet for seven seasons on Aaron Sorkin's "The West Wing."

The original over-the-top 2010 revenge fantasy starring tattooed badass vigilante Danny Trejo began life as a fake B-movie trailer in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 throwback exploitation flick "Grindhouse." It featured a galaxy of stars, including Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Cheech Marin and Lindsay Lohan.

The sequel will again feature Trejo, Alba and Rodriguez, along with Mel Gibson, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara and Zoe Saldana. Rodriguez announced in a tweet on June 12 that principal photography on the film had begun. The second chapter of a planned trilogy, due out in 2013, finds Machete being recruited by the U.S. government to stop a cartel leader and an arms dealer who have deployed a weapon in space.

Michael Jackson Still The King Of Pop Three Years After Death

MJ's continued influence on pop culture has proved that the King of Pop will forever remain in the hearts of music fans.
By Nadeska Alexis

Music fans the world over can mark June 25, 2009 as one of those eerie days that force them to recall exactly what they were doing in the moments before they heard tragic news. Michael Jackson died that day, at the age of 50, and the world was not ready to see him go.

No entertainer could ever fill the void that MJ left behind, but his memory has not faded in the three years that he's been gone. In the past 12 months alone, we've seen Jackson-inspired productions, heard narratives from celebrities who continually cite him as a key influence, and this summer his face will be plastered on Pepsi cans to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his classic album Bad. Keep reading to see a few examples from the past year that prove that Jackson has remained forever in the heart of pop culture.

Conrad Murray manslaughter trial

The public and very messy manslaughter trial for Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray began in late September, and it was an excruciating and drawn-out ordeal for fans who were hoping to find closure after the star's death. After a painstaking six-week trial, which included testimony from 49 witnesses, a jury delivered a guilty verdict on involuntary manslaughter charges for Murray on November 7, and the world let out a collective sigh of relief.

Watch the Throne shout-out

The guilty verdict in Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial was handed down just hours before Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne tour hit Madison Square Garden in New York, and it was clear that the hip-hop Titans were paying attention, just like everyone else. While spitting his lines on the WTT's "Welcome to the Jungle," Jay threw extra emphasis on the line, "Rest in peace to the leader of the Jackson 5," which drew applause from the crowd.

Cirque Du Soleil launches Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour

After a few preliminary shows in Canada, in October Cirque Du Soleil launched Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour in the U.S., dedicating a two-hour production entirely to the fallen legend. The mind-blowing mashup of dance and acrobatics, set to MJ's music, was an immediate hit, and the 65 artists who trained intensely for their performances did not take their responsibilities lightly. When MTV News caught up with one of the dancers backstage, following a performance set to "Danger," he admitted that the entire production was deeply emotional, and that if MJ could see the show, "he would feel such a sense of pride of what he has given us to work with."

Jackson tops fans' hologram wish list

Tupac's hologram appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April set off a firestorm of speculation about which deceased entertainer we could expect to see onstage next. Not surprisingly, MJ was on the tip of many a fan's tongue. LMFAO's Redfoo put MJ's name at the top of his hologram wish list, while a quick poll of fans in the Times Square area found that the masses wholeheartedly agreed."It's a really cliché answer, but in my time I've never seen [Michael Jackson] and it would just be something awesome to watch," one fan told MTV News.

Justin Bieber's "Die in Your Arms" single inspired by MJ

Justin Bieber stopped by MTV's Times Square studio on June 19 for his "Bieber Live" special, during which the 18-year-old superstar performed one of his new singles "Die in Your Arms," and explained that the track was inspired by old MJ footage he viewed during a session with producer Rodney Jerkins. "Before I got in the booth, [Rodney Jerkins] showed me this hour-long video of Michael [Jackson] footage, never been seen before. It's Michael's personality, him in the booth dancing. It's some really special stuff," Bieber recalled. "So me seeing that, going in there and being inspired and working with Rodney, who worked with Michael — it was incredible."

Pepsi 'Live For Now' Campaign

In 1984 Michael Jackson first linked up with Pepsi for a $5 million marketing campaign, and 28 years later the soda giant is teaming up with the Jackson estate to commemorate the 25th anniversary edition of his classic album Bad. The "Live for Now" campaign will find the icon's face plastered on special, limited-edition Pepsi cans this summer. The cans will include special download codes treating fans to Bad remixes.

Rick Ross shouts out MJ on Self Made Vol. 2

From Bieber to Rick Ross, no artist has escaped the influence of Michael Jackson. The Maybach Music Group CEO is unveiling his latest compilation album Self Made Vol. 2 on Tuesday, just one day after the anniversary of Jackson's death, and that fact didn't escape him. Ross begins the LP's intro by telling fans, "If Michael Jackson came alive right now, he'd ask you to smoke one for him. So in his honor [lights up]."

Jackson Brothers launch Unity Tour

Five days before the June 25 anniversary of MJ's death, his four brothers — Jermaine, Jackie, Tito and Marlon — launched their Unity Tour. The Jackson brothers revealed that a joint tour has been in the making for years, but admitted that they needed time to heal after losing the most famous member of the Jackson 5. Following Michael's death, all four brothers were featured on the A&E reality series "The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty," which found them coping with their loss. In April it was rumored that an MJ hologram would make an appearance on the jaunt, but there's been no confirmation that the early reports were true.

Pauly D Fully Supports 'Snooki & JWoww'

'Jersey Shore' star, who just wrapped up his own spin-off, says there is no rivalry among the cast.
By Jocelyn Vena

Don't expect there to be any tension among the "Jersey Shore" crew as they film the next season of their hit show. According to the cast, there are no hard feelings between since they fully support one another's spin-offs.

Pauly D just wrapped up his own MTV series, "The Pauly D Project," just in time for the network to welcome "Snooki & JWoww" to its lineup. The show, which premiered Thursday, will follow the girls as they have one final fling before Snooki welcomes her first child into the world. Before it even kicked off, Mr. Delvecchio himself expressed his excitement about the show.

"Oh, no way [is there any rivalry]. No way!' he told MTV News back in April at the network's upfront. "I'm actually dying to see their show. I want to see it 'cause we've all been through this together too, so were experiencing all the spin-offs together."

The love goes both ways, with the mama-to-be also agreeing that no matter what anyone in the crew does, whether it be a TV show or any other project, the "JS" family will always have one another's backs.

"Every time something happens with any of us we're always happy for each other," Snooki said. "We're never like 'Ugh, they got that.' We're very genuine about it."

But just because the cast only shares love, doesn't mean that sometimes they won't get into an argument or two.

"We have a couple fights, it's pretty amusing now that we're over them," JWoww told MTV News in June about her new show. "It's just typical relationship ... me and him are hotheads. We go from zero to sixty, and he's the first boyfriend that I've ever had that won't back down ... Roger's like 'you're out of your mind.' You kinda saw it last season when I tried to give him sh-- and he was like, 'I don't know who you think you're talking to.' "

'X Factor' Judges Discuss 'Bizarre' Performances, Infighting

Britney Spears admits the other judges 'ganged up' on her when they disagreed with her critique of a contestant.
By John Mitchell

"The X Factor" judges Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, L.A. Reid and Louis Walsh, the British "X Factor" panelist who has been sitting in for Simon Cowell while he recovers from bronchitis, are in Kansas City, Missouri, as auditions for the second season of the reality singing competition continue. The group gave their first interview since Spears and Lovato were announced as judges at the Fox upfronts.

The judges discussed the "bizarre" performances they've seen, how they get along, whether Spears' and Lovato's careers as performers make them more sympathetic or critical of the contestants, and the one time everyone ganged up on Britney.

"I feel like we've had a little bit of bizarre performances overall," Spears said of the Kansas City performances. "There have been some good ones, but for the most part, there's been some that were pretty bad!"

Reid admitted that he and Spears "get along good," but that much like Cowell, Walsh has been the quippy thorn in Reid's side.

Luckily for Walsh, though, he does get along with the two women judges. "Britney likes me and Demi likes me," he said.

Asked which judge the rest of the team tends to agree with the most, Reid said that Spears has the best eye for contestants that have that special something. "We tend to agree with Britney more than others. Honestly, I'm being funny, but she has amazing taste."

"You ganged up on me one time though," Spears quickly countered, half-jokingly. "You three guys did. One time, [and] it wasn't nice!"

"One time out of 75 auditions, that's not bad," Reid replied.

As for what makes Spears happiest when judging, she said, "It's the best feeling when someone comes onstage and just makes us want to stand up and gives us energy."

Having made their names as entertainers, both Spears and Lovato admitted that their careers have helped them relate to the contestants because they've "been in their shoes." But it's a double-edged sword because it has made both judges more sympathetic to the show's contestants, particularly when they have to deliver bad news.

"It's something I've definitely had to learn. At first, I really didn't even want to do it," Lovato said of having to criticize contestants. "It's easier to say, when you're having meetings with people, 'Oh yeah, it will totally come easy,' or something. But when I got in the seat and had to give negative criticism to somebody ... it sucks. But they're asking for your advice, and by stepping on that stage, they also know that you could not like their performance. They're taking a chance, and I'm going to take a chance by telling them something that I believe."

The interview comes on the heels of news that all four judges walked off the set after a disastrous audition in which a contestant — who reportedly wasn't a particularly talented singer — sang with his back to the panel. "It was really awkward," a source told People.com. "They didn't want to waste their time."

People also reported that Spears is proving to be a tougher judge than many expected. A source told the magazine, "She's got a really good instinct, and when she loves something, she looks like she wants to dance on the desk. When she doesn't like someone, she is incredibly tough."

For her part, the pop star insists her firm stance is in the best interest of the contestants. "It's all tough love ... I promise!" Spears tweeted along with a link to the People article.

Britney Spears seems poised and ready to sit beside her fellow "X Factor" judges on the revamped second season of the show. At the Fox upfront this week, the singer appeared alongside fellow newbie Demi Lovato, as well as returning judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, and gushed about the Fox reality show.

"Just really being able to be there and inspire the other contestants ... they're so young and they're trying to fulfill their dreams," she said at the event. "It's just a whole beautiful concept. It's just really cool."

While her negotiations with the show had been making headlines in the weeks leading up to the official announcement, Cowell brushed off all the hoopla, which includes a rumored $15 million payday for joining the show. "A force of nature, I was somewhere in the middle, but I'm thrilled. I love these guys," he said of getting everyone, including Spears, on board. "I charmed her."

Spears seemed equally taken with the prickly Brit. "He's adorable. He's completely adorable. He didn't have to try hard," she admitted.

Spears' addition to the show is hardly the only casting making news: Lovato also opened up about having the "X Factor." While little is known about the final hours going into locking Lovato in for the show, she's rumored to be taking in $1 million, according to Gossip Cop. Lovato was on a short list of possible contenders to appear on the show that also reportedly included Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne. "I'm so excited to be here," she said. "I guess you called," she added with Simon by her side. "And that's how it got set up, just a phone call." In addition to getting warm and fuzzy about each other in the interview, Cowell shared that the judges will be filming in the next couple weeks when they hit up Austin, Texas, to begin scoping out talent. And if you think the claws might come out then, Reid assured viewers that that won't be the case. "Oh no, we're gonna be really sweet to each other," he said. "Nothing controversial. It'll be perfect."
