'As soon as the woman in Florida put [the cornrows] in, the character was alive,' actor says of his drug-dealer role.

Despite the young actresses with Disney roots starring in Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," the film is far from just another teen rom-com about traipsing on the beach and falling in love with long-haired surfer boys. This movie's stars — Selena Gomez, and Ashley Benson — are seduced by a grungy rapper named Alien, played by "127 Hours" actor James Franco.

When Gomez tweeted a photo from the set, we barely recognized Franco in character. Dressed in a bright Hawaiian shirt and donning tattoos, massive sunglasses and a gold wristwatch, this isn't the scholarly, unkempt actor we're used to spying in set photos. But what stood out the most were the cornrows neatly aligned on the top of his head. When MTV News' Josh Horowitz caught up with the actor at CinemaCon 2012, he asked Franco what inspired the cornrows for "Spring Breakers."

"That's a character that Harmony and I have been talking about for over a year," Franco said. "Harmony is one of the best, kind of, researchers that I know, and we just went through a series of looks. You know, people have said, like, K-Fed or Riff-Raff, but that character really is kind of an amalgamation of a lot of different people and inspirations."

Korine's films are notoriously gritty and provocative, and "Spring Breakers" is no different. It's a big departure from Disney's "Wizards of Waverly Place" for Selena Gomez and "High School Musical" for Vanessa Hudgens. And while Ashley Benson's "Pretty Little Liars" is a tad more scandalous, the ABC Family hit series isn't nearly as graphic as "Spring Breakers" is expected to be.

The film follows four girls who rob a restaurant to fund their spring break trip. When they're bailed out by Alien, a drug and arms dealer, they find themselves seduced into plotting and helping him with a murder. Gomez recently told Interview magazine that leaving behind her stereotypical good-girl characters is what attracted her to this role. "I was getting kind of repetitive in terms of the roles I was picking, and I really wanted to do something completely different," she said. "I want to be taking myself seriously as an actress, and this was definitely a stretch. I mean, I'd never smoked a cigarette before in my entire life. It was really funny — they had to show me how to do it."

Franco — whose usual attire doesn't include cornrows — also noticed how the character came to life with the help of Korine's direction and the small details to which he paid close attention.

"I can say this: As soon as the woman in Florida put [the cornrows] in, the character was alive. We both knew. We looked in the mirror and it was like, 'Oh my, God. He's here.' "

Club track is second release from singer's upcoming Looking for Myself.

'We've probably been tweaking and working on it for six months,' director Ruth Hogben tells MTV News.

Kanye West surprised and confused fans last week when, out of the blue, he dropped a video for "Lost in the World" off his fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. But director Ruth Hogben tells MTV News that she and 'Ye actually shot the video together last summer.

Hogben, a fashion filmmaker, explained that she was introduced to Kanye through her SHOWStudio colleague Nick Knight, who thought that she would be a good fit to work with the eccentric rapper/producer.

The pair first began discussing their plans for the video around May 2011, and they captured all of the visuals in a two-day shoot later that summer. "I think he just wanted something that represented the song really well," Hogben said, detailing the brainstorming session.

"He explained how he felt about the song and it was a really interesting process because he just talked to me about the song — how he felt about the lyrics, about the beat. He was really very concerned about how he felt about the track, so that's where it started.

"It was a really strong collaborative process," she continued. "The conversation was very organic — he says one thing, I say one thing, he sends a picture, I send a picture. So it was a creative conversation that just kept rolling. We had a two-day shoot and then we spent quite a long time working on the edit together, making sure that it was right. We've probably been tweaking and working on it for about six months."

On first look, the black-and-white clip seems to play up the desperation of the Bon Iver-featured "Lost in the World," with West and his dancers set against the dark, ominous backdrop, but Hogben describes the final product as "energetic." She maintains that fans are supposed to come up with their individual interpretations of the clip. Even the dancers in the video were given the creative freedom to let loose. "It was actually their interpretation of the song," Hogben explained. "Kanye didn't say to them, 'Dance this way.' We wanted an interpretation of how they felt about the song."

Fight coordinator Jonathan Eusebio leads MTV News through the movie's biggest battles.

As you're watching "The Avengers" on the big screen, it's easy to forget that the heroes you see fighting the alien invaders are actually paid actors and that those actors learned their moves not from a secret government agency like S.H.I.E.L.D., but from fight coordinator Jonathan Eusebio.

Eusebio spoke with MTV News in the lead-up to Marvel's ultimate crossover to walk us through each key fight scene.

There are some minor spoilers ahead, so if you haven't seen "The Avengers" yet, consider yourself warned.

Black Widow in Chair
"Joss [Whedon] already had in his head how he wants the fight to look and how he thinks she would get out of this situation. He gave us notes on what he wants, and we design the fight around those notes. We choreograph it. We show it to him. There are more notes, and we just keep changing it until he's 100 percent happy.

"The chair makes it interesting. You need some kind of gimmick to make the fight different and to give it some interesting story point. Her being strapped to a chair and being interrogated, we already have the premise set out for us. We just have to be inventive on how to get her out.

"The hardest part is that it's very hard to be mobile, even moving around fighting with that thing strapped to your back. There are a lot of things that have to go along with it. We have to find the right chair at the right height, so that we can stand with it, that we can move around with it."

Thor vs. Iron Man vs. Captain America
"With those kinds of fights that involve a lot of digital effects, we have the base things outlined. When they're actually interacting with each other, that's our job with the stunt people. When Iron Man and Thor are throwing each other around up in the air, there's kind of a handoff from practical people to computer-generated people. Each department has to work together to make it seamless.

"What makes it interesting is all of them there together; you're trying to do your best to stay true to what people identify as their characteristics. There's no one character that I find more fascinating. What's interesting is the dynamic between five or six people and keeping them different enough to make it fresh."

Hawkeye vs. Black Widow
"The thing about these two characters is that they're not superhuman in the sense that the other superheroes are, so you just have these two agents with vast skill sets. For Jeremy [Renner] and Scarlett [Johansson], they had to really train hard because they're not just fighting aliens or computer-generated guys; they're fighting each other also. A lot of their training involved them working out together quite a bit.

"We cover a mix of different martial arts, but more practical martial arts, a mix of karate, jujitsu, judo, Pilipino martial arts, muay Thai boxing. It's a bunch of different elements of a bunch of practical martial arts."

Hulk vs. Thor
"The Hulk is completely computer-generated, but Chris Hemsworth had to actually interact with a person during that whole skirmish. We had a stunt double for the Hulk, so Chris was interacting with him the whole time you see the Hulk onscreen. The Hulk's also three or four feet taller than Thor is, so visual effects had to keep reminding us, 'This is where the Hulk's head is. This is how long the Hulk's reach is.' We had to work side-by-side with them for that whole sequence."

The Big Finale
"We had a team of 20 or so stunt men for the whole run of the movie. Not only did we have doubles for all the actors, but for Loki's army, we had a whole crop of stunt men, 10 to 12 core guys. All we did is choreograph huge action pieces for the whole last sequence. When that sequence actually came up, we already had really good pieces choreographed and rehearsed with most of the actors and the stunt people.

"It was really good that the actors trained really hard. There were some days that were tough and we had to make stuff up on the spot, and not just individual one-on-one type pieces. It would be pieces where it's eight-on-one, and the actors would pick it up on the spot, that day. I was pretty proud of the fact that they could adapt to changes on the spot. There's a Thor-Captain America team-up in the street, that one we pieced together pretty quick the day before we were going to shoot it. I think that turned out really good."

Director calls first film 'an extraordinary experience' — but he also tells MTV News he needs to rest for '17 years in a cave.'

Now that "Marvel's The Avengers" has taken in oodles and oodles of cash during its opening weekend here in the U.S., it's time to talk about the sequel, of course!

There will likely need to be some serious discussions about scheduling, but given the fact that Marvel already has plans for a slew of other superhero-related sequels like "Iron Man 3", "Captain America 2" and "Thor 2," another "Avengers" can't be too far away, can it?

MTV News put the question to the first film's mastermind, Joss Whedon, by asking for his thoughts on returning to helm a second chapter of the film. Whedon provided some insightful commentary about his experience, along with some artful dodgery.

"You know, it was an extraordinary experience," Whedon said. "The actors gave me so much, Marvel gave me so much trust. And [when] I said, 'Well, if I was going to do this [movie], I'd like to do this,' that's the movie I made," he explained of his satisfaction with the creative freedom he was afforded with the film. "And they only ever moved it forward and collaborated and supported me. And I gotta tell you, that's unusual from a studio."

So we'll take that positive and diplomatic response as "I will have to think about it"? Similarly, when we ran into Whedon at the film's world premiere in Los Angeles, we tried to get more specific and asked him how many days of vacation he'd need before he'd be able to think about a sequel.

"Seventeen years in a tiny cave," Whedon said with a smile. "In Tibet."

I would think that if she's managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, ["X Factor" would be] a walk in the park," Cowell said. "I would be fascinated to hear what she has to say. She's still hot, she's still having hit records and she's still controversial. There's a reason for that."A point of conflict has reportedly been Cowell's insistence that Spears sign a two-year contract with the show, while she wants the option of opting out after just one season if she feels the gig is not a good fit. 'Twilight' actor will play a thief in the Australian outback.

Robert Pattinson is on a roll, Twilighters. It was just announced that the beloved actor has joined director David Michod's "The Rover," also starring Guy Pearce.

While there is little known about the project, Deadline Hollywood reports the film takes place in the near future and follows a man (Pearce) who ruthlessly hunts a group of thieves through the rough Australian outback after they steal his car. Pattinson will play a thief named Reynolds. According to Variety, Michod will pen the script based on an original idea from "Animal Kingdom" star Joel Edgerton and himself. David Linde and Liz Watts are set to produce under Lava Bear Films and Porchlight Films.

The news immediately follows the announcement that Pattinson signed on for "Mission: Blacklist," the movie adaptation of Eric Maddox's book "Mission: Blacklist #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein — As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture." The actor will star as the man who led the hunt.

Both "Rover" and "Mission" are still in development, but Pattinson has a busy year ahead of him. He travels to the Cannes Film Festival to promote David Cronenberg's mind-tripping "Cosmopolis" and closes out "The Twilight Saga" as Edward Cullen one last time in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2." Also available on VOD beginning Friday is the titillating drama "Bel Ami," which opens in Los Angeles, New York and select cities June 8.

"Very nice they are too."

'NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let's help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!' Jackson tweets.

Is there anyone on the planet at this point who doesn't know that Samuel L. Jackson is a man not to be trifled with? Whether it's snakes at 20,000 feet or dopey college kids who try to rip off his boss, the highest-grossing actor of all time is a badass both on and off the screen.

Which might explain why he was a bit miffed when, amid the almost universal acclaim  for "The Avengers,"  he read a review from New York Times critic A.O. Scott that was not entirely positive.

The veteran critic wrote, "'The Avengers' is hardly worth raging about, its failures are significant and dispiriting ... The light, amusing bits cannot overcome the grinding, hectic emptiness, the bloated cynicism that is less a shortcoming of this particular film than a feature of the genre." But the part that likely stung the most was his takedown of Jackson's role as eye patch-wearing Nick Fury, head of spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D., which Scott called, "more master of ceremonies than mission commander."

Say what again? "#Avengers fans, NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job!," Jackson tweeted on Thursday. "Let's help him find one! One he can actually do!" The blast set off some conversations with a few fans, including one who replied, "@SamuelLJackson the critic has a right to his opinion. Just because the movie has made a ton of money does not mean it is a good movie." Considering that "The Avengers" has set some overseas box office records  and is on track to potentially smash U.S. high-water marks, Jackson replied, "Actually, sometimes IT DOES!"

The back-and-forth kept going, with another disappointed Twitter user taking issue with Jackson's furious anger and "irrational" response to the negative review, asking if people are still entitled to their own opinions? "That is My Opinion!" Jackson replied. "What's irrational about it? They aren't going to fire his jaundiced ass & You & I Know It!"

The Hulk, Black Widow and director Joss Whedon are among the biggest highlights of the surefire blockbuster.

What does Loki, an all-powerful Asgardian with an entire alien army backing his play, have to fear from a mere mortal like Tony Stark?

"The Avengers," an arrogant-as-ever Tony offhandedly warns the villain just before the climax of the Marvel Studios superhero flick. "It's what we call ourselves: Earth's Mightiest Heroes."

But even if Thor's misguided brother has six heroes of varying sizes and power sets to fear, there's nothing for the folks at home to get nervous about: "Marvel's The Avengers" is an absolute masterpiece that fully sticks the landing. Written and directed by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon, "Avengers" takes six heroes who have zero business hanging out in the same movie — the aforementioned genius playboy Tony "Iron Man" Stark, man-out-of-time Steve "Captain America" Rogers, god-out-of-orbit Thor, hulking scientist Bruce Banner, and stone-cold spies Natasha "Black Widow" Romanoff and Clint "Hawkeye" Barton — and creates a cohesive whole that, against all odds, completely and utterly works.

Fans have been waiting since 2008's "Iron Man" — heck, since well before then — for "The Avengers" to hit theaters. Well, it's (almost) here, and it's as phenomenal as you'd hope it to be. Chances are you're already planning to see the biggest superhero assembly this side of Comic-Con, but in the rare event that you're not, here are five reasons to push you over the edge.

They Did It
That's the first thing you need to know: Somehow, some way, Whedon and the fine folks of Marvel Studios not only pulled off "The Avengers," they exceeded all expectations for just how great this movie can be. The idea of Iron Man and Thor sharing the same space onscreen wasn't always easy to swallow, but Whedon handles it fantastically, marrying all these characters together in a fully believable way through a compelling story and even greater dialogue and relationships. Some characters have more prominence than others, sure, but everyone gets their moment in the sun. It's a beautiful thing.

Kiss of the Spider
"Buffy," "Angel," "Dollhouse" and more — Whedon's greatest stories always feature incredibly powerful, fully realized heroines, and "Avengers" is no exception: This is the Black Widow you've all been waiting for. The filmmaker takes a one-note character from "Iron Man 2" and develops her into a crucial component to the success of "The Avengers." She kicks ass and doesn't bother taking names, but just as importantly, she cuts to the core of her surrounding teammates with ease. Her scenes with Hawkeye and Bruce Banner are particularly poignant, but it's her face-off with Loki that stands out as the highlight. Speaking of which ...

Master of Mischief
It's hard to top seeing Earth's mightiest heroes on the battlefield together. But if there's anything that comes close, it's Tom Hiddleston as Loki. He's the perfect choice for the "Avengers" villain: emotionally tied to the team, a deeply wounded individual who has a lot of anger issues to work out with mankind, a master of muddling even the greatest hero's thoughts. Hiddleston owned this role in "Thor," and he surpasses himself in "Avengers," thanks in large part to masterful writing from Whedon.

We Have a Hulk
Forget Loki's army, the good guys have exactly what they need: a mean, green giant with purple pants. (What, you don't have one of those?) I'm a proud fan of "The Incredible Hulk" and was sorry to see Edward Norton go, but if I'd known what Whedon and Mark Ruffalo had in store for Hulk fans, I wouldn't have complained even slightly about the recasting. Ruffalo is perfect as Bruce Banner, a world-weary scientist who has been through hell and back and is still around to tell the tale. As for the big green rage monster he transforms into from time to time? He's not only the coolest character in the flick; he's at the center of the movie's very best scene. Trailers have not spoiled this one, either. You'll know it when you see it.

Everyone's Having Fun
Don't get me wrong: I'm as excited for "The Dark Knight Rises" as anybody. But that movie is going to be bleak. You know it. I know it. Guess what "The Avengers" isn't? Bleak. It's the exact opposite. It's a bright burst of light shining through the modern tradition of gritty, salty, take-no-BS heroes that have populated theaters lately. Growly Batman and angsty Spider-Man have their place in the world, but there's so much to be said for a group of heroes that leave you hooting and hollering at just about every turn. More than anything, "The Avengers" is a fun time at the movies. That's as important as anything.

Jason Trawick has petitioned court to become pop star's co-conservator, sharing responsibility for her 'general well-being.'

'It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,' guitarist says.

On October 14, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/borgir_dimmu/artist.jhtml">Dimmu Borgir</a>Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be <a href="/news/articles/1593780/demi-lovato-metalhead-metal-file.jhtml">Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band</a> — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said."It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after <a href="/news/articles/1596201/this-moment-make-dream-reality-metal-file.jhtml">dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records</a>. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/moonspell/artist.jhtml">Moonspell</a>Moonspell, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/winds_of_plague/artist.jhtml">Winds of Plague</a>Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP."It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- is this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring."I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings."And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/susperia/artist.jhtml">Susperia's</a>Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/vader/artist.jhtml">Vader</a>Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake."We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.The rest of the week's metal news:Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, Winds of Plague, have announced ex-Azusa drummer Art Cruz has joined their ranks — he replaced Jeff Tenney. 'My mind was just blown,' one moviegoer tells MTV News in Times Square.

The long-awaited "Avengers" finally assembled Thursday night at theaters throughout North America with one of the biggest midnight openings since "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2." We were on the scene in New York's Times Square, where fans dressed as Loki and the Hulk donned their RealD "Avengers" collector glasses and couldn't stop raving about Earth's mightiest heroes.

"I was really worried that it was gonna be just subpar, if not even at all good. But then I saw it. I just had to sit there for a minute and just take it in. It was amazing!" said Akil Vichus Davis, who was skeptical that director Joss Whedon could take on such a hefty project. But he was pleasantly surprised and said he's very happy with the outcome. "It was solid. It was good. The stories were good. They had great moments. The cinematography, the directing, it was off the chain. It was good."

Marvel fan Justin Silver agreed, saying, "My mind was just blown. I was just like, 'Oh my God!' It was crazy. It was unbelievable!"

The ensemble cast includes Marvel newcomer Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and many actors reprising their roles, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Evans, who plays Captain America. Anand Kodamanchili was thrilled with how much the legendary First Avenger was featured in the film. "I'm a huge fan of Captain America, and just watching him kick some serious ass again, again and again was pretty awesome," he gushed.

With its earlier overseas release, "The Avengers" has raked in more than $300 million internationally so far, according to Deadline Hollywood. When box-office expert Jeff Bock said, "This isn't just a movie, it's an event," he wasn't kidding. AMC Theaters held the daylong "Ultimate Marvel Marathon," screening "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor" and "Captain America" back-to-back leading up to the "Avengers" midnight release. The screenings sold out in numerous major theaters in North America more than a month ago.

Deadline also reports that the film grossed a total of $281.1 million through its first eight days overseas and is slated to hit over $160 million in the U.S. through Sunday. With a rise in ticket prices, especially 3-D and IMAX, there's a strong chance it could top the current record, held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," of $169.2 million. If you include the opening weekend in Russia and China, the film could potentially make close to $585 million worldwide through Sunday. A studio mogul told Deadline, "It's tracking off the charts. Biggest in every category and with everyone — men, women, young, old. Any way you slice and dice it. It's just a mega-movie."

So what's the secret? We certainly noticed a mix of men and women at the premiere release last night. Moviegoer Kelly Burbrink enjoyed the comedic parts of the film. "[I] absolutely loved the one-liners of the humor," she said. "They were fantastic and I'm sure we missed a bunch because everyone was just dying laughing after them that you couldn't hear what came right after. They were just hysterical."

There's something in it for everyone. Action, comedy, an insanely attractive cast — and when you mix that with the directing talents of Joss Whedon, it's no wonder fan Nicole DeBonis screams, "Oh my gosh! No words can describe it."

Daniel Vives agrees and highly recommends the film for all audiences, saying, "Joss Whedon did an excellent job with directing and writing the movie. Everyone needs to go see this movie."

"The Avengers" is currently in theaters nationwide.
