Will Black Keys Team Up With Ke$ha? First They Want Jim Nabors

The duo sat down with MTV News in Berlin to discuss a pair of unlikely collaborations.

<P>Theirs is a relationship that has spanned time and Twitter, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/77286418598211584" target="_blank">seafood</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/157523381602889728" target="_blank">shaving</a>, but over the years, the unlikely bond between the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_keys/artist.jhtml">Black Keys</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/id_3213641/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> has grown to become something <i>more</i>: a genuine friendship, marked with the occasional trespassing charge. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:731631.id:1678505" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "We're friends with her, we've known her since way before she was famous, before she was even a singer, I guess," Keys drummer Patrick Carney told MTV News. "When she was 16 years old, she used to sneak into our shows. We kind of became friends with her by kicking her out of our backstage room, over and over again. She actually has snuck into shows in L.A., San Diego, Coachella ..." "She snuck in and [got] kicked out of one show, like, <i>five</i> times," frontman Dan Auerbach added. "[She] snuck in through the kitchen. I don't know if she's such a big fan; she just likes breaking the rules." So, when MTV News sat down with the 'Keys in Berlin during the premiere of their <a href="/news/articles/1678662/black-keys-gold-on-the-ceiling-music-video.jhtml">"Gold on the Ceiling"</a> video, we had to ask if their friendship with Ke$ha would take the next step: an actual musical collaboration. It's not all that far-fetched, considering both Ke$h and Auerbach live in Nashville ("I see her every once in a while flying by in her T-Top [convertible]," Auerbach laughed), and recently, the glittery one has logged studio time with <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/160846424609787906" target="_blank">the Flaming Lips</a>. So, could we see a team-up on the next Black Keys album? "I guess, I don't know," Carney said. "We don't really do that many collaborations, really." OK, so if a Ke$ha collabo isn't in the cards, just who would the 'Keys like to work with next? Well, as it turns out, they've got their eyes set on landing a very big star for the next record ... even if they mistakenly believe he's deceased. "We both want to work with Jim Nabors very badly, but apparently he's not with us anymore," Carney said. Oh, <a href="http://www.jimnabors.com/" target="_blank">but he is.</a> Which means that, much like Nabors, the dream is alive. The Ke$ha collabo? Eh, probably not so much. <i>Should the Black Keys hit the studio with Ke$ha? Leave your comment below!</i></p>

Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Tim Burton's claymation remake of his 1984 classic recalls the visual styles of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas.'
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The first trailer for Tim Burton's "Frankenweenie" has debuted, and it has something for just about everyone. There's a whole lot of nostalgia for the fans of the original Tim Burton short film.

Both follow Victor Frankenstein, a young boy who reanimates his recently deceased pooch, Sparky. The new version uses the same visual style that fans fell in love with in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "The Corpse Bride," but hangs onto the black and white from the 1984 classic.

There's just so much to enjoy about the "Frankenweenie" trailer that we've broken it down in to five key scenes that you'll need to check out.

Disney Logo
Tim Burton lets us know right off the bat that this isn't your typical Disney movie. Cinderella's castle fades to a stark black and white. Lightning strikes in the background. Clouds appear and the rain begins. This is an older Disney, the studio that previously had no problem going a little dark, but never too dark. The alter logo perfectly sets up what is to follow.

The Lightning
As a remake, there's always the question of "Why?" Why does the classic short film from the '80s need to be revisited by the man who made it in the first place? The answer comes in the form of an intricate shot that follows the bolts of lightning through the wires to Sparky. The claymation allows Burton to go back and approach the story in an entirely different way, with no limit to what he can film and how he can film it.

Edgar
When adding an hour to the length of a story, you're going to have to add a character or two. One of the welcome additions is Edgar, the stand-in for Igor in this case. His look says it all and is in keeping with the spirit of the movie.

Bride of Frankenweenie
A nice throwback to the original short film, Sparky meets a nice girl poodle in the trailer. When her nose comes into contact one of his bolts, shocks run through her hair, and she ends up with a hairdo similar to another famous monster bride. It's a nostalgic touch and one that is sure to please fans who loved the original so much.

Burton Humor
Even without the signature claymation style and the dark circles around the eyes, you could probably tell this is a Burton film in more subtle ways like the gag at the end of the trailer. Sparky, happy to be alive again, gets a little too enthusiastic with his tail wigging and sends it flying into a nearby trash can. The joke has the feel of the two previous Burton claymation movies and lets us know that "Frankenweenie" will definitely be in the same vein.

Are you excited for the remake of "Frankenweenie"? Leave your comment below!

Conrad Murray Not Expected To Serve Full Four Years

Legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi tells MTV News he isn't surprised by sentence but doesn't think it's justified.
By Gil Kaufman

Dr. Conrad Murray sits in court after he was sentenced for the involuntary manslaughter of singer Michael Jackson at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Judge Michael E. Pastor sentenced Murray to four years in the Los Angeles County Jail for the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson. A restitution hearing has been scheduled for January 23, 2012 to determine the amount of restitution to be paid to the Jackson family.
Photo: Mario Anzuoni-Pool/ Getty Images

<P>Though he dodged a potential four-year prison term, former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> physician Conrad Murray was sentenced to an equal amount of time in Los Angeles County Jail on Tuesday (November 29) in the death of the pop singer. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:714975.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> But the same overcrowding problems that spared the cardiologist from doing time in a federal pen might also save him from serving his entire sentence in county as well. Shortly after the <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">sentence was handed down</a> by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, Los Angeles Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore told <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/jackson_family_reacts_conrad_murrays/277336" target="_blank">E! News</a> that Murray would likely end up serving "a little less than two years." Due to overcrowding, most county jail sentences are immediately cut in half, and given the 46 days credit Murray has already been given, he is looking at even less than that. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank"><b>Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</b></a> Murray's lawyers said afterward that they believed the sentence was unnecessarily long. "Yes, of course [Judge Pastor] was harsh. He gave the stiffest penalty he was entitled to give under the law," Murray's attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, told reporters. "He was openly hostile. ... [Murray has] led 56 years of exemplary life. He was really dreading [sentencing]. I think anybody would dread going into it. He's an honorable man, and he'll get through this. The family is suffering more than Dr. Murray is. ... Dr. Murray is the provider in that family." Pastor had leeway in the sentencing, with options ranging from probation to the full sentence, but in a lengthy ruling from the bench, he said Murray's lack of remorse and negligent behavior called for the highest possible penalty. "He is and remains dangerous ... the request of probation is denied, the court imposes the high term of four years imprisonment in this case," Pastor said during the 90-plus-minute hearing. Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that he wasn't surprised by the sentencing but that he didn't believe it was justified. Cavalluzzi said Pastor had incentive to give the full sentence because of the prominence of Jackson and his family and to create the perception that he is tough on crime. "He gets that perception by sentencing him to the max while not having to surrender the defendant to the full sentence," said Cavalluzzi, who was not involved in the case. "He gets the self-satisfaction of being perceived as being tough on crime and making the Jackson family happy, but I don't think it was a fair sentence." Cavalluzzi said when deciding prison versus probation, judges have to look at someone's criminal history and whether a person is likely to complete the terms of their probation, which he believes Murray would. "I'm not seeing aggravating factors here, and I think it was just a chapter in [Murray's] life and he does not have a history of being a mercenary doctor always after money, but of being a good, responsible doctor who was seduced by the celebrity and money that Jackson offered," he said. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> As to why Pastor gave such a dramatic, lengthy explanation for why he was sentencing Murray to the max, Cavalluzzi said the judge has to have a justification for his actions in the public record. "Because he doesn't have the discretion to give a high prison term, [Pastor] has to justify his sentence in the record and have very specific reasons for it. I don't think there's any way that anyone truly believes that from this day forward Dr. Murray truly represents a threat to society. That's just ludicrous." And while he doesn't agree with the four-year term, Cavalluzzi said the high-profile nature of the case and the glare of the media could have played into the sentence. "It probably gives [<a href="/news/articles/1675068/conrad-murray-sentencing.jhtml">Jackson's family</a>] great comfort to have someone to blame," he said. " 'If not for this awful man, my son, brother, father would be alive.' But it's not fair to do that and it feels like a capitulating judgment in favor of feeding the emotional needs of the family." Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Mother Katherine Jackson told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair." The prosecution, however, was satisfied with the ruling. "We're pleased. That's what we thought was appropriate. The judge obviously agreed with us," deputy district attorney David Walgren said. "It was our position that it was not a simple, one-time mistake; it was a series of mistakes culminating in the abandonment of Michael Jackson when he died ... the judge agreed with that sentiment. A brother and a son and a family member was killed, and whatever the sentence may be, the family of the victim deserves justice. And we did everything to bring them that justice." As for how much time Murray will spend locked up, Cavalluzzi said it is likely to be less than two years and, frankly, he predicted, the doctor could be out even sooner than that. "He might be eligible for house arrest very quickly," he said.</p>

'Project X' Finds 'New Way In' To Teen Party Movies

'It has a very music-video kind of vibe,' one star tells MTV News of found-footage film produced by 'Hangover' director Todd Phillips.
By Kara Warner

For those of you who've seen the "Project X" marketing campaign and wondered, "What is that movie?," the stars and producer have the answers you seek.

Yes, this is a film about a high school party thrown by the not-so-cool kids that gets so out of control an entire suburban block is engulfed in flames. But it's not just about the action; it's the unfinished, citizen-videographer feel that defines the film.

"How do you make a movie for a high school audience today?" producer Todd Phillips ("The Hangover," "Old School") asked MTV News, talking about how he and first-time director Nima Nourzadeh approached their new take on a classic concept. "It wasn't so much about jumping on a found-footage bandwagon. It was more about: How do you make it feel current and different? When you're making a comedy, it's always, 'What's the way into this movie? What's the new way in that we haven't seen before?' For us, that's what this was."

"It's stylized in a way that's never been done," added star Jonathan Daniel Brown, a.k.a. J.B. in the film. "It's got three amazingly funny people, if I do say so myself, and it's crazy. It doesn't hold back."

"This movie has so much style, a lot because Nima directed it," continued Oliver Cooper, a.k.a. mischievous instigator Costa. "It has a very music-video kind of vibe."

Thomas Mann, who plays the birthday boy and party host Thomas, said audiences will feel like they're actually inside the party. "It's really raw for a comedy. It's not polished in the way that other comedies like 'The Hangover' are," he said. "I think it wants to feel more personal, like kids hanging out, rather than set-up jokes, which is helpful, I think, with a found-footage film."

In addition to all the talk about fancy style and camera techniques, the film is basically a roller-coaster ride that quickly runs out of control.

"I don't feel that there are any other high school films that reach this level of insanity," said Alexis Knapp, who plays the "popular pretty girl" Alexis.

"It's a whole other level," added co-star Kirby Bliss Blanton.

Taylor Swift Calls Work On 'Lorax' 'Completely Different'

Doing voice-over 'very different from when you're singing songs that you wrote,' Swift tells MTV News.
By Matt Goodhue, with reporting by Kara Warner

From the recording studio to the stage, it's certainly clear that Taylor Swift has a knack for expressing her emotions and skills. While the singer/songwriter has graced the silver screen only once, she's taken her talents to the sound booth for her portrayal of Audrey, a tree-loving daydreamer in the upcoming film "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax."

MTV News sat down with Swift recently as she prepared for Friday's release of the famous Dr. Seuss tale, which follows the journey of a young boy who must save endangered trees in hopes of winning a girl's heart. While making music and characterizing an animated girl are two quite-different tasks, if anyone can do it, and do it well, there's no doubt it is Taylor Swift.

"It's a completely different space that you go to in your head," Swift explained about voice-over work. "It's very different from when you're singing songs that you wrote. ...With this, you're sitting there in a booth by yourself having conversations with no one."

Having scripted conversations by yourself and answering questions to a voice you can't even see might seem like a lonely gig, but, as with any of her work, the Grammy-winner found meaning and excitement in her role. Even though Audrey and Swift might not exactly resemble one another physically (Audrey has red hair), the blonde singer/songwriter connected with the character on a deeper level.

"She's heavenly. She's such a day dreamer, and she cares so much about the past," Taylor said. "To some degree, you have to have a priority based on the past and the future as well as the present."

As seen in the trailer, the character of Audrey is fun, bubbly, curious and a big fan of trees. Swift certainly fits all of these traits, and we're looking forward to seeing what she does with the character when "The Lorax" is released Friday.

Oh, and does Taylor dig trees as much as her animated counterpart? "I grew up on a Christmas tree farm, and she's obsessed with trees," she shared.

Do you think Taylor's voice will work well onscreen? Share your thoughts in the comments!

'Project X': The Reviews Are In!

Critics call the found-footage teen movie immature, unfunny and even dangerous.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Jonathan Daniel Brown, Oliver Cooper and Thomas Mann in "Project X"
Photo: Beth Dubber/ Warner Bros.

"Project X" is the new found-footage movie that claims to show the most out-of-control party ever. Well, it seems like the party might be over based on the reviews the film has earned.

Critics have skewered "Project X," calling it immature, unfunny and even dangerous. For some, that might sound like a ringing endorsement of the party, but when it comes to throwing a movie together, "Project X" is much less successful.

Here is our roundup of "Project X" reviews.

The Story
"In suburban Pasadena, three exceedingly ordinary high school dudes stage a birthday bash for one of them, even though they're hardly the sort of guys that you'd expect to attract a hot crowd. Thomas (Thomas Mann), the one turning 17, whose parents are going away for the weekend, is the dutiful son who has promised — oh, has he promised! — not to mess up their home." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The Laughs
"It's billed as a comedy, but there's not a laugh to be had during the frenetic mayhem. There is also no plot beyond debauchery, nor characters beyond cardboard cutouts. Basically, it's a setting, and a familiar one: a suburban home teeming with drunken, druggie, hedonistic, irresponsible high-schoolers." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The POV
"Aesthetically, the film sets the teeth grinding and the eyes aching. Presenting the spectacle from the p.o.v. of a home video camera documenting the event for posterity, first-time director Nima Nourizadeh and cinematographer Ken Seng swing the camera around with all the stability of a rowboat in a storm and unsurprisingly induce a strong facsimile of seasickness. The images tend to be dark and random, the music incessant." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The Parents in the Audience
"But only about an hour in, 'Project X' grows repetitive and starts running out of steam, and you begin to wonder what could possibly occur over the remaining 30 minutes or so. And not to get all mom-ish, but it does send a disturbing message to teens under the guise of 'edgy' entertainment. If you provide a setting and the means for strangers to get hammered, it will make you cool. If you are a young woman who wants approval, you must get naked and give up the goods." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

The Final Word
"The only people likely to buy into the oh-so-shocking exploits of the teen comedy 'Project X' are those who can't get invited to their own high school parties. Though the central blowout is as epic as advertised, so is the movie's self-congratulatory obnoxiousness." — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

Justin Bieber Should 'Stay Strong,' Usher Says

'All of this comes with the territory,' Ush tells MTV News of paternity-suit drama.

<P><P><P><a href="/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> might not have known how big <a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> would become when he discovered him a few years back, but he was pretty sure he had found something special. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:712878" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Since Bieber burst on the scene with his <i>My World</i> EP back in 2009, the 17-year-old has grown up with the world watching. He's gone from up-and-comer to full-fledged pop sensation, racking up chart-topping albums and a box-office hit and becoming an all-around mega-heartthrob &#8212; all in two years. Of course, with the good does come negative attention as well. Recently, Bieber was hit with a <a href="/news/articles/1674509/justin-bieber-paternity-suit-dropped-2.jhtml">paternity lawsuit, which has since been dropped</a>. Usher, no stranger to his own controversies, had these words for the Biebs: "Stay strong. And know that all of this comes with the territory." Aside from the drama, Usher is especially proud of Bieber's charitable side. His mentor said he "absolutely" knew the kid from Stratford, Ontario, had a big heart from the start. "To write a check is only half of it, but when you truly take on a responsibility to be a philanthropist, you accept an effort, and I really think that Pencils of Promise is something that has a very bright future," <a href="/news/articles/1674628/justin-bieber-new-york-city.jhtml">Usher told MTV News at an event for the charity</a>, noting that Bieber is a only a small part of it. 'Lorax' Star Zac Efron Laughs Off Red-Carpet Condom Drop

Efron tells 'Today' show that he now has a 'pocket-checking policy.'
By John Mitchell

Photo: NBC/ Getty

At last week's "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" premiere, the movie's star Zac Efron caused quite a stir when he pulled his hands out of his pants pockets and accidentally dropped a condom on the red carpet. Unfortunately for the handsome star, just a few days later, he was scheduled to hit the talk-show circuit to promote the animated flick, which in these gossipy times meant fielding questions about the embarrassing snafu.

His first stop was "Today," where a blushing Matt Lauer asked Efron about the condom drop and, well, the journalist seemed to be having a harder time talking about the incident than the movie star.

"Your name brings a lot of attention to this role and this movie, and there's something else that brought a lot of attention to this movie recently, Zac, at the premiere," Lauer said with a smile. "Yeah," Efron answered reluctantly, knowing where the conversation was headed.

Lauer then asked the "High School Musical" breakout to "take me through it." Efron didn't exactly want to do that, but he did assure the anchor that he "never really had a pocket-checking policy when I was going on the red carpet before, but now we've fully instated one."

"You dropped a ... a condom on the red carpet," Lauer elaborated, just to make sure everyone was on the same page, though he was clearly uncomfortable.

"That was really hard for you to say," the 24-year-old star observed.

Clearly embarrassed by the conversation but maintaining his cool, Efron agreed with Lauer that the "better to be safe than sorry" message he was sending was "a great message to add to the many messages of the film."

That's when things took a turn for the super-awkward. Lauer tried to move straight into a conversation about Efron's production company. "You've got your own production company," Lauer started before laughing. "And that's a bad pun, by the way: your own production company."

Get it? His own production company.

If you thought the George Clooney/ Brad Pitt bromance was only reserved for "Ocean's Eleven"" movies, the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, well, think again. Pitt has just signed on to join his longtime pal for the West Coast production of "8," a play based on the landmark Proposition 8 trial in California.

According to E! News, Pitt will play Prop 8 opposer U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker, and Clooney will play David Boies, an attorney who sought to overturn the highly publicized ban.

Written by Oscar-winning "Milk" screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, the play has a star-studded cast that includes Martin Sheen, Christine Lahti, Jamie Lee Curtis, Matthew Morrison, Matt Bomer, Kevin Bacon, Jane Lynch, John C. Reilly, Campbell Brown, Chris Colfer, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Cleve Jones, Rory O'Malley, George Takei, Yeardley Smith, Vanessa Garcia, Jansen Panetierre, James Pickens Jr. and Bridger Zadina, according to CNN.

"8" follows the legal process behind the overturning of Proposition 8, the California law that outlawed gay marriage. The play already ran on Broadway last September and will go on tour through 2012, with different actors taking on roles along the way. The one-show-only Clooney-Pitt production takes place on March 3 and will be streamed live on YouTube, according to the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact. Rob Reiner is directing.

Clooney recently made headlines when he addressed long-standing gay rumors about himself in The Advocate. "My private life is private, and I'm very happy in it. Who does it hurt if someone thinks I'm gay? I'll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don't give a sh--."

As for his friendship with Pitt, Clooney said, "People think Brad and I hang out all the time, but the truth is that we see each other very rarely, maybe a couple times a year. I do think we've set the bar very high [for other actor duos] ... I'm very proud to call him my friend."

Britney Spears Has 'Crazy' Cameo On will.i.am's Album?

<P>In a sea of A-list contributions for will.i.am's forthcoming solo album, the Black Eyed Peas mastermind recently dropped one name that will really get pop fans excited. Speaking with <a href="http://www.capitalfm.com/artists/william/news/britney-spears-alicia-keys-new-album/" target="_blank">Capital FM</a>, will teased that his <i>Femme Fatale</i> collaborator Britney Spears will make an appearance on the album, dubbed <i>#willpower.</i> </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:638813" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I have a song with Alicia Keys &#8212; me, Alicia and Swedish House Mafia. I have a song with the Beats, which is pretty grand. Me and Shakira have been trying to finish the stuff we started, and me and Britney is really crazy," he said. "So we got a song with me, LMFAO and Eva Simons, a song with me and Busta Rhymes and Swizz Beatz &#8212; I got a whole other bunch of collaborations." Spears and will.i.am last worked together on "Big Fat Bass," a spacey, grinding party tune complete with clapping noises and some rapping from will himself. Their recording session was featured on the MTV special <a href="/news/articles/1660830/britney-spears-femme-fatale-previews.jhtml">"I Am the Femme Fatale."</a> There's been no word yet from will's camp about the song and whether this is a new track or if he will be including "Big Fat Bass" on the album. The rapper/producer's love for Brit is hardly anything new: He <a href="/news/articles/1662289/britney-spears-will-i-am-big-fat-bass.jhtml">gushed to MTV News about the pop princess</a> months after they recorded together. "[I discovered] her love for music. I never seen anyone, like, come alive, full of excitement and giggling and laughing behind the mic," will recalled to MTV News. "She was like a little kid when she was recording the song, and it just brought the whole atmosphere, it changed the whole atmosphere when someone really loves music. So it was great working with her." His latest single, "T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)," featuring Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger, dropped late last year. <i>#willpower,</i> which also features "X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger, will be released later this year. <i>What are you expecting from will and Brit's collabo? Let us know in the comments!</i></p>

John Carter Plays Hard-To-Get In Exclusive New Clip

Star Taylor Kitsch stops by with never-before-seen footage from the film.

As part of "MTV First: 'John Carter,' " the man himself, Taylor Kitsch, sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz to talk about his upcoming movie and share an exclusive clip.

In the never-before-seen clip from "John Carter," the titular hero plays a little hard to get with the Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). Carter needs to find a way back to Earth after his unintentional trip to Mars, or Barsoom, depending on which planet you call home, but he's not exactly trusting of the Martian princess.

The plot may seem a bit convoluted, but Kitsch said that it all boils down to a story about a man. "The core of it is truly a guy that's been broken," he said. "He lost his family and gets transported on to Mars, as you do, and has this opportunity in front of him. The people, a woman, Dejah Thoris, pulls it out of him. To use clichés, puts that light back on within himself. He finds that cause again."

The story of "John Carter" began with an 11-book series by "Tarzan" author Edgar Rice Burroughs, initially released "almost 100 years to the day, by the way, which is incredible to this release," Kitsch said. A handful of directors have attempted to adapt the classic stories, but none was successful until Andrew Stanton, director of "WALL-E" and "Finding Nemo," created this version.

As soon as Kitsch met Stanton, he knew that he needed to be a part of the project. "I had an amazing first general meeting with Stanton. You walk into this room, and it's floor-to-ceiling preparation," Kitsch said. "The beauty of this meeting — and that's when you know you're safe as an actor — is that he didn't talk about budget, didn't talk about the grandeur of it all, the scope. It was truly just the character of Carter. I walked out of that meeting and was like, 'OK, my hat's in the ring. I'm going to do whatever I've got to do to get this role.' "

Getting the role was only the beginning of Kitsch's work. He quickly went on a strict routine in order to prepare for his mostly shirtless role. "It was the diet and training regimen, start to finish, for about 11 months, and then it was sword training, wire work and just trying to stay in that shape for seven months is a tough go," he said.

But even that kind of physical prep wasn't enough to ward off some of the injuries that come from jumping around Barsoom. Kitsch listed his injuries for MTV News, of which there were many. "High ankle sprain. Both groins were pulled. Hamstring pull. Arm went numb. Shoulder strain," he said. "Chest got cut open quite intently. It was a bloody mess. Then you got Stanton going, 'Action. Let him bleed.' "

The movie lands in theaters March 9.

'Project X' Finds 'New Way In' To Teen Party Movies

'It has a very music-video kind of vibe,' one star tells MTV News of found-footage film produced by 'Hangover' director Todd Phillips.

'Glee'-Cap: Michael Jackson Invades McKinley High

King of Pop's takeover leads to some head-scratching song choices.
By Jim Cantiello

"Glee"

<P>"Glee" paid tribute to Michael Jackson during Tuesday night's episode and, shockingly, kept the story moving along in the midst of several MJ-inspired musical numbers. Kurt, Rachel and Quinn all received great news about college, Rachel finally accepted Finn's proposal and evil Sebastian's plot to harm Kurt with a doctored slushee backfired when Blaine took the hit for his boyfriend. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:730282.id:1671179" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Yet the forced "all Michael, all the time" song selection led to some head-scratching scenes including Kurt, Rachel and Finn serenading an injured Blaine with Jackson's love song to a rat, "Ben," and two different music-video re-enactments only appealed to Jackson superfans. The rest of us can enjoy my latest "Glee-cap"! Hit play on the embedded video and sing along with these lyrics. "Glee," "Glee" 's really hit the skids<br> MJ would have loved all the singing kids Time for a tribute<br> Veiled as a dispute<br> They all imitate<br> Michael's vocal takes Wish they didn't try<br> To simply ape his sigh<br> I guess "Glee" got paid<br> In tickets to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/12/07/jackson-family-and-crew-talk-about-new-cirque-du-soleil-show-michael-jackson-immortal/">Cirque du Soleil</a> It's bad!
